Balti Meets: Maria Falbo of Copson
The birth of COPSON began way back in 2009 when Maria Falbo created a street blog under the name 'Copson Street', while she was filming for a skate video in Barcelona. Since then COPSON has worked with brands such as Eastpak and Fila, continually producing high-quality garments with their original 'sun-kissed' aesthetic. We got the chance to have a quick chat with the founder, Maria Falbo.
The Balti Club: Hey Maria, hope you had a good weekend! Did you get up to much?
Maria: This one was a chiller - hibernation mode for the winter.
The Balti Club: Copson’s clothing, and in fact the brand as a whole, has a distinctly tropical aesthetic and seems intrinsically linked to Summer. Coming into the Winter months, do you try and shift your design processes away from that aesthetic, or is it Summer all year round in Copson?
Maria: It’s summer all year round for us. In winter we stick with our aesthetic but apply some fabric changes to allow for the colder months.
The Balti Club: Italy or UK?
Maria: Both for very different reasons. Italy because they know how to live. England for its ever growing creative culture.
The Balti Club: Last year Copson released a stunning short film, ‘A Young Summers Heart’ in collaboration with NOWNESS. What was the inspiration behind this production?
Maria: The film was shot in and around my grandma’s house in Italy. We wanted to show the inspirations behind the brand and most importantly give people the feeling we know so well.
The Balti Club: Campari or Peroni?
Maria: Campari, for the spritz and Negroni factors.
The Balti Club: Over the past few years Copson has collaborated with some big brands such as Eastpak and Fila. Is there a certain brand that you haven’t collaborated with yet that you would like to? And if so, why?
Maria: Perhaps - but I can’t disclose this one.
The Balti Club: Pattern or Plain?
Maria: Nothing beats a plain classic.
The Balti Club: The brand has obviously come a long way since it started out. Do you remember the point when you decided to go full-time with Copson, and what inspired you to make that choice?
Maria: We still work on other projects, COPSON is and always will be a passion project. It’s not about making money, it’s about building something slowly with no compromises.
The Balti Club: Night In or Night Out?
Maria: Summer out, Winter in.
The Balti Club: Here at The Balti Club we’re extremely influenced by our memories of growing up in Dublin. These memories both inspire us and define who we are as a brand. Do you also find that Copson is linked to a certain memory of time or place? If so, what is that memory?
Maria: Absolutely - all of those sun-kissed memories living leisurely under the sun, skating, chilling, listening to good music. All of those good time feelings is what makes COPSON what it is.
The Balti Club: Thanks Maria for taking the time to answer our questions! Cant wait to see what 2017 has in store for COPSON and we wish you all the best!
